BRA DAY: Closing the Loop on Breast Cancer
BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) Day USA is an initiative designed to promote education, awareness and access regarding post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. It is an event that occurs annually in October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it is designed to “close the loop” on breast cancer.
It’s not for every woman, but it’s something every woman should know.
Many women eligible for breast reconstruction following cancer surgery are not aware of their options, however. Studies have revealed that:
- Less than a quarter of women (23%) know the full range of breast reconstruction options available
- Only 22% of women are familiar with the quality of outcomes that can be expected
- Only 19% of women understanding that the timing of their treatment for breast cancer and the timing of their decision to undergo reconstruction impacts their options and results
At The Center for Plastic Surgery at Sentara Martha Jefferson and the Sentara Martha Jefferson Cancer Care Center, we believe women should be able to make fully informed decisions, and that is why we support National Breast Construction Awareness Day.
